5 Essential Tips for Better Digiscoping with your Smartphone

Digiscoping opens up a whole new world for birdwatchers, plane spotters, and nature lovers.
By combining the optical power of your binoculars with the convenience of your smartphone, you can capture impressive photos and videos from a distance—without having to carry a heavy camera.

But like any technique, the right approach makes all the difference. Here are 5 essential tips to get the most out of your digiscoping experience:

  1. Use a sturdy tripod
Stability is key. Even the slightest shake can ruin a perfect shot. Mount your binoculars or spotting scope on a solid tripod to keep everything steady, especially when zooming in.

  2. Focus manually
Your smartphone’s autofocus often struggles when shooting through an optical device. If possible, adjust the focus manually using your binoculars or scope to achieve maximum sharpness.

  3. Avoid excessive digital zoom
Your binoculars already provide magnification. Zooming in too much digitally on your phone reduces image quality. Instead, use optical zoom and crop your image later if needed.

  4. Clean your lenses
Dust, smudges, or condensation on your lenses (or your phone's lens) can blur your image. Always carry a microfiber cloth and make sure everything is clean before you start.

  5. Experiment and learn
No digiscope setup is exactly the same. Play with angles, lighting, and settings. Review your footage afterward and learn what works best for you and your gear.
